A psychic desperate to escape her destiny—and a killer—finds her future in the coastal town of Burning Cove, in New York Times bestselling author Amanda Quick's latest novel.
Being Madame Ariadne, Psychic Dream Consultant, wasn't Prudence Ryland's ideal gig, but it paid well, which was reason enough to do the work—until she realized that her latest client intended to kill her.
But Prudence, a master at reinvention, finds a new job and home as far away as possible and is finally able to relax—which turns out to be a big mistake. Letting her guard down means being kidnapped and drugged and waking up in a bloodstained wedding dress in the honeymoon suite next to a dead man.
With the press outside the hotel, waiting with their cameras, and police sirens in the distance, it's obvious she's being framed for the man's murder. Prudence knows who is responsible, but will anyone believe her?
Prudence thinks it's unlikely that rumored crime boss Luther Pell or his associate, Jack Wingate, will buy her seemingly outrageous claims of being the target of a ruthless vendetta. In fact, Prudence is convinced that the mysterious Mr. Wingate believes her to be a fraud at best, and at worst, a murderer. And
Jack Wingate does seem to be someone intimately familiar with violence, going by his scarred face and grim expression. So no one is more shocked than Prudence when Jack says he'll help her. Of course, his ideas for helping her involve using her as bait for a killer, but Prudence feels oddly safe with Jack
protecting her. However, who will protect Prudence from her growing fascination with this enigma of a man?

Quick’s seventh Burning Cove romance (after When She Dreams) will please series fans eager to return to the glamorous golden age of Hollywood setting, even if this episode doesn’t feel as fresh as earlier installments. Prudence Ryland has been making a reluctant living as psychic dream consultant Madame Ariadne, a job she inherited from her grandmother, but after a client tries to kill her, she hightails it out of San Francisco to Los Angeles. Content to start anew as a librarian in the newly formed paranormal department of the local college, Prudence is forced on the run again after escaping a kidnapping attempt. Since she’s already acquainted with Luther Pell, who runs the local nightclub in the paranormal hub of Burning Cove, she turns to him for help. Luther connects her to the remarkably intuitive Jack Wingate, who’s intrigued by her close calls and wants to use her experiences to inform the book he’s writing on psychically interpreting crime scenes. Together, they hatch a plan to lure Prudence’s enemy into the open—and, of course, they fall in love. The series formula is familiar by now, but Quick remains a master of sparkling dialogue that builds believable chemistry between her leads. This is good fun. Agent: Steve Axelrod, Axelrod Agency.

Narrator Morgan Hallett builds the tension as soon as this romantic mystery opens. First, a former client attempts to kidnap psychic dream consultant Prudence Ryland. Later, when Prudence moves to a new town, she is actually kidnapped, left next to a dead man, and framed for his murder. To her surprise, Jack Wingate, an associate of the local crime boss, offers to help. Hallett infuses Prudence with confidence in her ability to handle whatever is thrown at her. The former client blames Prudence for her son's murder, and Hallett's portrayal brings out the touch of madness in the woman's grief. Most importantly, Hallett deftly handles the banter between Prudence and Jack as they join forces to identify the kidnapper/murderer. S.B. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
