From the award-winning author of Parable of the Sower:After the near-extinction of humanity, a new kind of alien-human hybrid must come to terms with their identity — before their powers destroy what is left of humankind.
Since a nuclear war decimated the human population, the remaining humans began to rebuild their future by interbreeding with an alien race — the Oankali — who saved them from near-certain extinction. The Oankalis' greatest skill lies in the species' ability to constantly adapt and evolve, a process that is guided by their third sex, the ooloi, who are able to read and mutate genetic code.
Now, for the first time in the humans' relationship with the Oankali, a human mother has given birth to an ooloi child: Jodahs. Throughout his childhood, Jodahs seemed to be a male human-alien hybrid. But when he reaches adolescence, Jodahs develops the ooloi abilities to shapeshift, manipulate DNA, cure and create disease, and more. Frightened and isolated, Jodahs must either come to terms with this new identity, learn to control new powers, and unite what's left of humankind — or become the biggest threat to their survival.

With rich, sonorous tones and a variety of voices and accents, Aldrich Barrett's narration completes this contemporary sci-fi classic trilogy, a postapocalyptic tale of alien-human hybrids. Barrett's skills shine with the various characters and with the unusual species and character names. Barrett also deftly manages the complex plot, guiding the listener through beautifully crafted prose. Jodahs is the first of his kind--an ooloi born to a human mother. He soon finds that he can shape-shift, cure or create disease, and even manipulate matter. With Barrett's artful narration, listeners will find this book fascinating, but listening to the series in order may provide even greater enjoyment. C.F. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

This classic postapocalyptic science-fiction novel is newly brought to life through the stunning narration of Ron Butler. Ron's years of experience as a voice actor shine in this sensitive and meaningful performance. Combining Octavia Butler's imagination, creativity, and expansive views with Ron Butler's narration--simultaneously very deep and matter of fact--creates a listening experience far greater than average. As protagonist Jodahs develops into their own best self, the listener will discover many passages that call to mind today's discussions and debates about gender roles and politics. This 1989 work is still both timely and deeply important. C.F. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
