The second in Kane's new series is not nail-biting suspense, but narrator James Colby keeps the story moving. His delivery sorts out the mobsters, thugs, and duplicitous politicians from the large team of Forensic Instincts investigators, who include analysts and Òmuscle,Ó a techie and a psychic. Their mission is to save a newborn's life by proving that the father was not murdered but is in hiding and bringing him home to provide a life-saving blood donation that will bolster the baby's immune system. Colby plays the team's banter, dalliances, interrogations, and slightly criminal investigations with an even keel. He provides just enough vocal variety to keep the characters clear and the plot sprinting to a satisfactory ending. D.P.D. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine

In bestseller Kane’s suspenseful second Forensic Instincts novel (after 2011’s The Girl Who Disappeared Twice), Manhattan photojournalist Amanda Gleason hires Forensic Instincts to find her real estate developer boyfriend, Paul Everett, who disappeared on Long Island eight months earlier and is presumed dead. Having recently received a grainy cellphone photo that appears to show Paul standing on a Washington, D.C., street corner, Amanda believes he’s alive—and is her only hope for a donor match for their newborn son, who suffers from severe combined immunodeficiency and might die without a stem cell transplant. When the Forensic Instincts team—which includes founder Casey Woods, former Navy SEAL Marc Devereaux, and techno genius Ryan McKay—begins to investigate, they’re unable to discover much about Paul’s past, while law enforcement agencies stonewall their efforts to gain information at every turn. Engaging characters help drive the twisty plot, which builds to a stunning conclusion. Agents: Andrea Cirillo and Christina Hogrebe, Jane Rotrosen Agency.

Kane is primarily known for romances, but this title is the second in a series of suspense novels. The debut volume, The Girl Who Disappeared Twice, introduced a team of experts who work inside and outside the boundaries of the law. The business, Forensic Instincts, includes a former Navy SEAL, ex-FBI agents, a psychic, and a bloodhound. Listeners would benefit from approaching the series in order, but there's enough backstory to fill in many of the blanks. Narrator James Colby does an excellent job of portraying many different male and female characters. The plot, which involves finding a missing father who may be the best chance of a medical donor for his dying infant, is engaging, but the story's pacing is slow until almost the very end. VERDICT Purchase as demand warrants for thriller and suspense collections.--J. Sara Paulk, Wythe-Grayson Regional Lib., Independence, VA
