Captain Kit Brightling is Aligned to the magic of the sea, which makes her an invaluable asset to the Saxon Isles and its monarch, Queen Charlotte. The Isles and its allies will need every advantage they can get: Gerard Rousseau, the former Gallic emperor and scourge of the Continent, has escaped his island prison to renew his quest for control of the Continent.
Gerard has no qualms about using dangerous magic to support his ambitions, so Kit and the crew of her ship, the Diana, are the natural choice to find him—and help stop him. But then Kit's path unexpectedly crosses with that of the dashing and handsome Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe, who's working undercover on the Continent in his own efforts to stop Gerard. And he's not the only person Kit is surprised to see. An old enemy has arisen, and the power he'll wield on Gerard's behalf is beautiful and terrible. Sparks will fly and sails will flutter as Kit and crew are cast into the seas of adventure to fight for queen and country.

Neill’s rip-roaring second Capt. Kit Brightling fantasy (after The Bright and Breaking Sea) pits Queen’s Guard Kit and her crew against a dangerous magical enemy. It’s looking increasingly like the Saxon Isles are headed back into war with former Gallic Emperor Gerard Rousseau, who’s escaped from prison and aims to dethrone Queen Charlotte. Now Kit and her crew on the Diana set sail to Gallia, where Rousseau was last sighted, on a reconnaissance mission. Once on land, Kit and her midshipman, Cooper, find more than they bargained for when they discover that the war criminal known as “La Boucher,” who caused a massive magical disaster and was believed to have died in the resulting fire, is still alive—and he’s practicing even more dangerous magic. Equally surprising is the man who comes to their rescue when they’re arrested as spies: Col. Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe. Aided by Grant, the Diana makes a narrow escape, kicking off a string of further adventures for Kit and Grant, who grow closer while working to stop both Gerard and Le Boucher. Adventure, romance, and the return of Neill’s strong heroine make for an engrossing installment. This will delight series fans and new readers alike. Agent: Lucienne Diver, the Knight Agency. -

Danielle Cohen narrates a historical fantasy that is by turns magical and swashbuckling. Captain Kit Brightling and the crew of the DIANA investigate threats to the Isles now that Gerard has escaped from prison and is openly marshaling his forces. Kit is a capable and competent woman in a professional field dominated by men. Cohen's portrayal of her encompasses a full portrait, including the parts of her that she does not easily share. Pirate kings, spies, sailors, and soldiers encompass a variety of nationalities and backgrounds, and Cohen does them all justice. While the story may be a touch predictable, Cohen's performance makes it a delight to experience. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine
