Dr. Miranda Ecuovo works as a forensic therapist, helping traumatized witnesses recover their memories so that they can testify about the crimes they observed.
Her most famous case resulted in the conviction of the serial killer Walther Gray, a pathologist's assistant known as the Butcher of the City.
One day Miranda is seized by Chance, one of the spirits known as the Undying, and transported to a fantastical dreamlike world. There she is greeted by an Angel and presented with an unusual mission: Help catch the rogue Undying who was the true mastermind behind the Butcher's crimes.
Now Miranda and Chance must stop the murderer before he kills again. Together they will race through a surreal otherworld of magical labyrinths and wondrous spirits—but also into the maze of Miranda's own memories when they retrace her original investigation.
As Miranda draws closer to the truth, she finds herself confronted by even bigger questions than the killer's identity. How could his victims' deaths be forgotten so easily? And what can she do to create a world where the vulnerable can be safe and have their lives treated as precious?

Lord’s standalone murder mystery is a fascinating work of fantasy that’s short on plot. As forensic therapist Miranda Ecouvo is wrapping up a serial murder case, she has a near-death experience that puts her squarely in the sights of the angels as well as Chance and the Trickster, a pair of semi-immortal brothers. With the brothers as her guides, she realizes that the case isn’t over and the mastermind behind the killings—whose goal is to attain immortality—can still be stopped. Lord plays with reality and dreams as Miranda follows the brothers on a dizzying chase across various labyrinths. The language is lush and beautiful, but the novel’s mazelike narrative can be hard to follow, and it starts to drag in its final third. Readers drawn to Miranda and her story will find that the effort it takes to untangle Lord’s puzzle is well repaid; others will find it needlessly complicated. Agent: Sally Harding, Cooke Agency. -

The smooth and elegant voice of Robin Miles guides listeners through a world out of time. This is the world in which Dr. Miranda Ecouvo, a forensic therapist, finds herself after a near-death experience. Here she meets the immortal brothers, Chance and Trickster, who help her finish an investigation of seven unusual murders. While Miles's narration is solemn and steady, she infuses a lot of spirit into the characters by giving them distinct and natural-sounding timbres and accents. It's easy to become absorbed in the story as the characters travel through Miranda's memory to get to the bottom of the mystery and stop a killer. C.J.S. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine -

Lord’s byzantine standalone second Redemption fantasy (after Redemption in Indigo) follows forensic therapist Miranda Ecouvo, whose work with traumatized witnesses to a series of murders led to the conviction of Walther Gray. While walking home from work one day, Miranda is struck by a bus. Though she narrowly avoids death, the accident plunges her into a realm between worlds, where she meets partly human spirit brothers Chance and Trickster. The brothers reveal that Walther Gray was not responsible for the murder spree—and the real killer is still out there. Aided by otherworldly powers, the killer now seeks immortality. To stop him, Miranda must traverse the labyrinthine spirit realm. As she delves into her investigation, Chance and Trickster embark on their own journey of self-discovery, seeking to understand their role in humanity and perhaps their own connection to the murders. The stakes are high and the suspense is palpable, but the complexity of both the plot and the worldbuilding make it arduous to keep the whimsical whodunit narrative straight. For readers willing to put in the work, however, this is an impressive feat.
