Alexander the Great is the most famous king and conqueror known in the ancient world. In his lifetime, he was given honors equal to those of the gods. After his death, he became a legend and the "Alexander Romance" became the best-selling fiction of the medieval world. Esteemed Professor Robin Lane Fox has made the study of Alexander of Macedon the focus of his brilliant career. In these lectures, Professor Fox answers questions about Alexander that have percolated throughout history: Why did Alexander succeed? What was he like? How did he change the world and its history?

If Alexander's story weren't true, we'd reject it as implausible: He was an unbeatable general in his early twenties, personally heroic, lord of an empire stretching from Greece to India, with a vision for conquest of the known world, felled by illness at 32. Robin Fox, an Alexander scholar, tells the story in 14 lectures, with considerable attention to sources. His voice is a bit creaky but clear, and his pacing good, despite the natural hesitations of the lecture format. His enthusiasm, his fascination with Alexander, and his deep knowledge (supplemented by practical experience as advisor for the film ALEXANDER) more than compensate for any occasional unevenness or dryness. This course gives the listener a solid grasp of the most fascinating story in ancient history. W.M. (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine
