Part of "The Modern Scholar" series of recorded lectures, this work includes eight talks by Drout (English, Wheaton Coll.). With topics ranging from the Odyssey and Beowulf to contemporary digital compositions, these lectures introduce listeners to the oral traditions that are the foundation of written literature. In an audio series such as this one, the presentation must serve as both lecture and, at least in part, textbook, leading the audience through material that can be difficult to master. Drout does this very well, proving himself a spirited and intellectually stimulating guide to works that might overwhelm a listener in less capable hands. VERDICT While keeping to the series' promise of "college-level courses," Drout teaches in an entertaining and accessible manner that ensures his listeners will be able to learn as they listen.--Wendy Galgan, St. Francis Coll., Brooklyn
