No one betrays the Academy. But now Euphemia must decide: break the rules for her enemy, or let the rules break her heart.

On the outskirts of London sits a seemingly innocuous institution with a secretive aim—train young women to distract, disrupt, and discredit the patriarchy. Outraged by a powerful lord’s systematic attack on women’s rights in Parliament, the Academy summons its brightest—and most bitter—pupil to infiltrate the odious man’s inner circle. A deal is struck: bring down the viscount, and Miss Euphemia Flite will finally earn her freedom.
But betting shop owner Gabriel Royce has other plans. The viscount is the perfect pawn to insulate Gabriel’s underworld empire from government interference. He’s not about to let some crinoline-clad miss destroy his carefully constructed enterprise—no matter how captivating he finds her threats.
From the rookeries of St. Giles to the ballrooms of Mayfair, Euphemia and Gabriel engage in a battle of wits and wills that’s complicated by a blossoming desire. Soon Euphemia realizes it’s not the broken promises to her Academy sisters she should fear. . . . It’s the danger to her heart.

Matthews ("Belles of London") begins a new series featuring the women of the Academy, who work to bring down the patriarchy of Victorian England. No one is allowed to betray the Academy once they've joined it. Miss Euphemia Flite is a key (if bitter) member who has been ordered to bring down a viscount, in exchange for her freedom from the Academy. Only bookie Gabriel Royce stands in her way. Prepub Alert.

The Crinoline Academy, an unassuming school for young ladies, sits outside London where it trains the best and brightest to fit in seamlessly with Victorian society while using their skills to dismantle the patriarchy from within. Euphemia Flite has been tasked with exposing a political leader's misdeeds to clear the way for legislation benefitting women. Unfortunately, Gabriel Royce, a powerful figure from the rookeries of St. Giles, needs the same man to pave the way for reforms in the slums. Euphemia's and Gabriel's goals may be at odds, but that doesn't prevent the sizzling attraction the outsiders feel for each other. Soon they'll have to decide between fulfilling their aims or sacrificing their principles for a chance at love. This series opener may be mild on the heat scale, but the chemistry between the two leads is scorching. Readers will thrill at the will-they-won't-they cat-and-mouse game while they root for the villain's deserved downfall. VERDICT The clever, witty, and powerful women at the heart of this story make for a promising start to an adventurous new series from Matthews ("Belles of London" novels). The next book can't come soon enough.--Meagan Day
